Yerevan police today arrested the head of a local shopping center where an explosion last August killed sixteen and injured scores more.
The country’s Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) informed Hetq that Surmalu Market Director Irina Madatova was arrested earlier today and that it will specify the charges later.
Yerevan police arrested four individuals following the August 14 explosion. Three remain in detention.
Two days after the blast, the Ministry of Emergency Situations claimed that four tons of explosive material had been stored at the market.
Update: A Yerevan court, on February 23, decided to detain Madatova for two months for violating fire safety regulations and forging a document. The investigation is ongoing.
