In 2001, important legislative acts concerning Lake Sevan, the largest body of fresh water in the country and the entire Caucasus region, were adopted by the Armenian government.
The reasons for the Sevan algae blooms are diverse, most notably the waste runoff into the lake that brings large amounts of organic and inorganic substances, the drop in the water level, and persistent overfishing of fish and crayfish.
