Pashinyan Backs Karapetyan Arrest, Sets EU Application Timeline, and Rejects CSTO Role

At his November 5, 2026 press briefing, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed several major domestic and foreign policy developments:

  • The Samvel Karapetyan / ENA Case: When asked about the new corruption allegations against billionaire businessman and opposition leader Samvel Karapetyan, Pashinyan stated that the law enforcement agencies have "compelling grounds" for the process. He noted that the wealth of the country’s so-called "national benefactors" should be thoroughly investigated. He emphasized that if AMD 64.5 billion in corporate abuses occurred, it is a legal matter that demands state action, adding that past leaders have used external geopolitical threats to disguise decades of domestic plunder.
  • EU Membership Timeline: Pashinyan confirmed that Armenia intends to officially apply for full membership in the European Union in 2027 or 2028. He clarified that while Armenia is not immediately exiting the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the government is focused on providing alternative strategic paths and allowing the Armenian public to make a democratic choice.
  • Total Severance from the CSTO: Responding to reports that the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) plans to strip Armenia of its voting rights at an upcoming meeting on November 11, Pashinyan remarked, "Our interest in the CSTO has run its course, and we have no interest in the CSTO."
  • Sovereignty and "Real Armenia": Pashinyan issued a stark warning regarding national identity, stating that his opponents are attempting to humiliate and undermine the country's sovereign rights. He warned that if the state fails to anchor its policies in a vision of "Real Armenia" rather than historical ideals, Armenia's very existence could be called into question.
  • Travel to Turkey: Pashinyan confirmed that he intends to travel to Antalya, Turkey, to participate in the UN Climate Change Conference (COP31) scheduled for November 9–20.
