Trees Cut Down on Komitas Street to Make Way for MP's Supermarket

For the past few days, they have been cutting down trees in the vicinity of 58 Komitas Street. Workers say that construction is underway for a new "Yerevan City" supermarket belonging to MP Samvel Aleksanyan. He already has a few stores in Yerevan. The trees, seen here, were cut down outside 60 Komitas. Readers who called Hetq say that the men cutting down the trees have been wearing uniforms with the name "CPS". There is a gas station by that name in the area which also belongs to MP Aleksanyan. Workers say that the gas station will shortly be demolished or moved to another location. Yerevan’s chief arborist Suren Maksapetyan confessed to Hetq that he had no knowledge regarding the cutting of trees in the area. "If those cutting the trees were from the Yerevan Municipality, I could give you an answer on the spot. We haven’t issued any such permission. We will take the matter up with the Ministry of Nature Protection," Mr. Maksapetyan told us and promised to get back by day’s end. When we asked if anyone could just take it upon themselves to prune these trees, Mr. Maksapetyan said that would be a violation of the law. The Environmental Inspectorate at the Ministry also appeared in the dark about the trees being cut. P.S. - Hetq has just been informed that inspectors from the Ministry have been sent to the site in question. We impatiently await their 'professional' evaluation.
