MP Shirak Torosyan - "I'll go to the courts if not permitted to enter Georgia"

23_02-sh_torosyanShirak Torosyan, a member of the Armenian Parliament and President of the “Javakhk Patriotic Union” has still not been allowed to cross the border into Georgia. He told “Hetq” today that he’s been in touch with the RoA Foreign Minister and Deputy Foreign Minister Shavarsh Kocharyan regarding the matter. “The Foreign Minister told me that negotiations are underway to resolve the issue, but nothing concrete has resulted,” Mr. Torosyan stated. Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Tigran Balayan informed “Hetq” that the ministry has heard nothing new on the matter from the Georgian side either. MP Shirak Torosyan was stopped at the border on June 19, 2009, by Georgian officials and not allowed to enter the country. He was informed that the reason was due to his political work in support of the Javakhk-Armenian community. Such activity, the Georgians contend, severely damage Armenian-Georgian friendship. “I guess it means that the Georgians can do whatever they wish and we are supposed to remain silent all in the name of neighbourly relations, “says MP Torosyan. “I wanted to enter Georgia with my diplomatic passport, as a member of the Armenian Parliament and a member of the Armenian-Georgian Parliamentary Friendship Group. I was also invited to Georgia by a European organization that deals with minority issues.” When asked about his next move if the Armenian Foreign Ministry cannot resolve the problem, MP Torosyan said, “The ministry has assured me that everything is being worked out. I have to be patient and wait for them to make good on their promise. I’ll think about future steps if and when the problem isn’t resolved in a reasonable time. There are several options available and one would be to take the matter to the courts.”
