Georgian Ambassador Meets with Protestors; Promises that St. Gevork's Will be Rebuilt
The Georgian Ambassador to Armenia, Georgy Targamadze, was greeted by scores of protesters today outside the embassy building in downtown Yerevan, angered by what they called Georgian indifference to the preservation of Armenian cultural and religious monuments in Georgia.
The protestors, many of them parishioners of the St. Sargis Church in Nork, pointed to the recent collapse of the St. Gevork of Mughni Armenian Church in Tbilisi as an example of the negative results of the Georgian policy of neglect. Earlier today, their priest had told them to attend today’s rally and protest the collapse of the church.
Father Yesayi of the Holy Trinity Church told “Hetq”, “We cannot remain silent. After independence, the Armenian Church in Georgia has lacked any legal status. The problem has reached a point where now churches are collapsing as a result.”
Ambassador Targamadze accepted a official letter of protest presented by the rally organizers and promised to relay their concerns to the Georgian government.
