Three more individuals testified today in the on-going criminal trial of "Haykakan Zhamanak" newspaper editor Nikol Pashinyan who faces charges of fomenting public disorder on March 1, 2008, following the presidential elections the previous month.
The first to be questioned was retailer Laura Melkonyan who claims to have been opposite the Myasnikyan Statue where opposition leaders were addressing the assemble throngs. She stated that she saw Nikol Pashinyan on the stage and heard him say, "Everything will be fine. Do not leave. We will win." She stated that many in the crowd wanted to march to the home of Levon Ter-Petrosyan, under house arrest, and bring him to the square but were told to wait till the next day. "They told us that the following day our president would occupy the presidential palace."
Karen Kostanyan, the next witness, says that he happened into the area by accident and that he had just purchased some circus tickets for his kids and that he was on his way home to fetch them. He stated that there was all this commotion, so he stopped out of curiosity and at one point stood on a burnt out car for a better look. Mr. Kostanyan confessed that he only heard Pashinyan urge the crowd to "get ready". For what, he couldn’t be sure.
The last witness was Lavrenti Gasparyan, who had been sentenced to four years for participating in the riots on March 1. Mr. Gasparyan said that he was never incarcerated because his wife was pregnant and his mother sick. Instead, the court fined him 28,000 AMD for damages he inflicted, and he paid the fine.
Mr. Gasparyan testified that works at the Malatia farm produce market and that on the day in question one of his friends came by and told him that Hakob Hakobyan was exhorting people to Myasnikyan Square. "They were saying that a fight had broken out with the police and that we had to go," the witness stated.
Mr. Gasparyan confessed that he too threw rocks at the police and took part in the confrontation with law enforcement in front of the Yerevan Municipality. He stated that the crowd was armed with sticks and stones.
He ended by claiming that Pashinyan was urging the crowd to arm and defend themselves.
Given that the other subpoenaed witness never showed up, the trial was recessed till November 19.
