Eight Witnesses in the “March 1st” Trials Complain of Pressure Tactics
Eight witnesses in the "March 1st Seven" trials who say that they are being subjected to various pressure tactics have officially registered complaints with Armenia's Helsinki Association.
Helsinki Association President Mikayel Danielyan today issued a intermediate brief on the issue. "Yes, pressure is being exerted and it's serious. The pressure has reached such a degree that those responsible are proposing that one leaves Armenia," he stated.
One example is the case of Tatoul Karapetyan, no longer in Armenia, subpoenaed to testify in the case of Sasun Mikayelyan. Another is Aristakes Vardanyan, a witness in the case of Grigor Voskerchyan. It was suggested that he leave for Russia.
The Helsinki report states that witnesses, who have been illegally brought to various police departments and the prosecutor's office, have been subjected to physical abuse and inhuman treatment.
Mr. Danielyan said the report is based on the personal accounts of the witnesses and that the tape recordings are in his custody. Included in the report is Gagik Avdalyan who testified against Myasnik Malkhasyan and Suren Sirounyan; Rafayel Balbabyan, a witness in the Sasun Mikayelyan and Myasnik Malkhasyan trial; Gevorg Mouradyan, a witness in the Hakob Hakobyan case; Hmayak Galstyan, a witness in the Alexandre Arzumanyan and Suren Sirounyan case, among others.
Mr. Danielyan said that the actions of the RoA General Prosecutor’s Office aren't aimed at uncovering the truth but rather to elicit, through force, favorable testimony from witnesses during the pre-investigation period.
"The court cases related to the events of March 1st are falling apart in laughable fashion," declared Mr. Danielyan. He pointed to the example of Grigor Voskerchyan who was arrested on March 8 and indicted on March 11. The charges were said to have been founded on the testimony of witnesses but the first witness was questioned on April 22, 2008.
Mr. Danielyan said that he doesn't believe that President Sargsyan will declare an amnesty for those detained. "The nation's president has no basis to say such a thing. There will be no amnesty," he said.
