Shant Harutyunyan Set Free after Charges are Dropped
Shant Harutyunyan, arrested and later imprisoned, on charges stemming from the events of March 1, 2008, was released today from the Vardashen Detention Facility where he was being held. Charges that he had organized mass public disturbances were dropped on psychological grounds.
Mr. Harutyunyan told "Hetq" that "I read the release statement and threw it aside. I didn't even sign my release papers."
Mr. Harutyunyan said that, "A panel of medical experts concluded that at the time of the alleged crime I wasn't conscious of what I was doing and thus not responsible for my actions. It's a very obtuse statement. As far as I can make it out, they are saying that I didn't comprehend the severity of my actions on March 1. Crudely put, I went crazy on that day. I can assure you I wasn't nuts before March1 nor am I nuts today. What they wrote was total nonsense. That's why I didn't sign the release form."
On March 9, 2009, Judge Mnatsakan Martirosyan, who was hearing the criminal case of the "March 1st Seven" decided to postpone the proceedings against Shant Harutyunyan until his health improved.
On March 17, Mr. Harutyunyan was transferred from the Vardashen facility to the Nubarashen psychiatric ward to undergo a court mandated psychological examination. He had neen transferred back to the Vardashen detention facility on April 14.
