Witnesses to be Compelled to Appear at Trials

sirunyan-arzumanyan"I have come as a citizen of the Republic of Armenia, to see how justice is being served. But today, there is no justice in Armenia. They are calling those witnesses that were standing outside of Levon Ter-Petrosyan's house," stated 74 year-old Levon Sireyan. Mr. Sireyan, who resides in the village of Vartenik in the district of Martuni, made a special trip to Yerevan to watch the court proceedings of those arrested during the March 1st events of 2008. He was perturbed that the court wasn't ensuring the presence of the witnesses singled out in the trial. Garnik Danielyan and Hmayak Galstyan, witnesses subpeaoned in the trial of Alexander Arzumanyan and Suren Sirounyan, didn't show up for today's trial session. Defense attorney Liparit Simoyan motioned the court to take measures to ensure that witnesses due appear on the days that they are called. Defendant Alexander Arzumanyan added, "Otherwise, the prosecution should disavow the testimony of these witnesses, just like it did in the case of two others. Especially since there's nothing of import in their testimonies to begin with." Prosecutor Koryun Piloyan agreed with the proposal to mandate the appearance of the witnesses. Presiding Judge Mnatsakan Martirosyan noted that the witnesses had been suitably informed well in advance of the trial date and that they hadn't warned the court of their impending absence. The court found that there was sufficient basis to personally transport the witnesses to the next trial session and directed the Armavir Police to make such arrangements. The next trial date was scheduled for April 27 at 2:00 pm. "I sympathize with both Arzumanyan and Sirounyan and with all political prisoners in general. I'm the son of a victm of the 1937 persecutions. The same is happening today. I was 18 months old when they exiled my father in 1937. I wasnt to see whether this government, this regime, has anything nobility to it," continued Levon Sireyan who pointed to the affadavit proving that he is the son of a political prisoner. Mr. Sireyan noted that he would definetely make a point to show up at future trials to see if justice is being served in Armenia.
