Arzumanyan, Sirounyan "March 1st" Trial Resumes
The trial of Alexander Arzumanyan and Suren Sirounyan, both charged with "organizing mass public disturbances" on March 1, 2008, continued today at the Kentron and Nork-Marash court of First Instance, Judge Mnatsakan Martirosyan presiding.
At today's session only Emma Beglaryan took the witness stand. She stated that only happened to be in the vicinity of the Myasnikian Statue by chance as she was on her way to St. Sargis Church to light a candle and pray.
Ms. Beglaryan stated that she asked the police to let her through to get to the church. Seeing the assembled crowds and becoming interested as to what was transpiring she stayed in the vicinity for about 1-1.5 hours. She said that all she witnessed was Nikol Pashinyan telling the crowds "struggle, struggle until victory and not to be afraid". She saw no disturbances taking place. In her words, neither were the crowds throwing rocks at the police nor were the police using force against the people.
When the prosecution asked her what were the people saying, who were they to struggle against and why were rocks being collected, Ms. Beglaryan responded that the stones were to used only in defense.
She said that she wasn't familiar with Alexander Arzumanyan but that someone else pointed out Suren Sirounyan to her. She described what he was wearing that day but couldn't hear what he was shouting to the crowd.
Ms. Beglaryan stated that her testimony had originally been taken down by someone sitting at a computer but that she had read the transcript and signed off on its veracity.
When Suren Sirounyan asked her when she had seen him at the demonstration Ms. Beglaryan responded that he was sometimes on the platform or while he was getting off it and while he was giving directives to the crowd. When Mr. Sirounyan asked the witness if she had ever attended Ter-Petrosyan rallies before and why, Ms. Beglaryan stated that she had since her neighbors had once told her they were going to a funeral and invited her along. She later learnt it wasn't a funeral they were going to but a rally.
At this point Judge Martirosyan called for a forty minute recess to see what happened to the other scheduled witnesses that hadn't showed up.
