Witness Cross-Examination Continues in "March 1st Seven" Trial

arzumanyan-sirunyanThe trial of Alexander Arzumanyan and Suren Sirounyan, charged with "fomenting public disturbances" last March 1st, continued today at the Kentron and Nor-Nork Court of First Instance. At today's session the court, Judge Mnatsakan Martirosyan presiding, interrogated witnesses Yura Poghosyan and Susanna Galstyan. Ms. Galstyan's testimony mostly dealt with a phone conversation she had with Alexander Arzumanyan dealing with the installation of gas stoves in Taterakan Square. The conversation had been phone tapped by the National Security Service. She stated that Mr. Arzumanyan wanted the gas stoves to be installed so that the pavement not be damaged by open fires and so that the assembled crowds "stay warm in a civilized fashion". Yura Poghosyan testified that the stoves belonged to his company and that they were removed from the Opera Square because, "the Italian equipment couldn’t work on Armenian-made gas". As with the previous two witnesses, Yura Poghosyan stated that he spotted neither Alexander Arzumanyan nor Suren Sirounyan in the vicinity of Myasnikian Statue on March 1, 2008, and had heard nothing about them organizing any public disturbance. However, today's other witness, Susanna Galstyan, noted in court that, "On March 1st, near the Myasnikian Statue, Alexander Arzumanyan was giving clear instructions to Nikol Pashinyan to incite disorder." When cross-examined by Alexander Arzumanyan as to whether she heard such instructions by her own ears, Ms. Galstyan answered, "No, I didn't hear anything because I was standing too far away. But I saw the gestures. I can only assume that such things were being said." Witness Galstyan also told the court that she first gave testimony to pre-examination officials on March 3, 2008. When defense lawyer Liparit Simonyan pointed out the fact that her testimony was recorded by these officials as having been taken on April 29, Ms. Galstyan responded, "I know that it was after March 1. But I can't remember if it was in March or April." At press time, the trial is continuing.
