"March 1st Seven" Trial Witness - "I saw Ter-Petrosyan at Myasnikian Statue"

arzumanyan-sirunyan1After a ten minute recess the trail of Alexander Arzumanyan and Suren Sirounyan got underway with the testimony of eye-witness Samvel Gasparyan, a worker at a kiosk near the Medical Institute. Mr. Gasparyan testified that he saw Levon Ter-Petrosyan on the evening of March 1, 2008, at the Myasnikian Statue. He testified that when he saw the crowds of people he followed them to see "how it would all end". In a haltering fashion Mr. Gasparyan stated that he "wished to be with the people" and that around 7pm on March 1 he made his way down to Freedom Square at the Opera and then followed the crowds to the Myasnikian Statue. Samvel Gasparyan testified that he witnessed the speech of Levon Ter-Petrosyan by the statue and that he saw Arzumanyan around 9 or 10 pm. When questioned by the defense when he saw Levon Ter-Petrosyan the witness replied, "They were together, how do I know what time it was?" Mr. Gasparyan also stated that he heard Nikol Pashinyan shouting something along the lines of, "Let's send this Karabakhtsi guy packing, and let’s overthrow this regime." When asked by defense lawyer Liparit Simonyan how he could explain the fact that Levon Ter-Petrosyan wasn't at the Myasnikian Statue on the day in question, the witness countered by saying, "I don't know. I just remember seeing him with Arzumanyan and with Nikol. I saw him here shouting out that the people had to overthrow the regime, that enough was enough." Defense lawyer Simonyan then asked the witness if he had any prior medical history. At first Mr. Gasparyan answered that he did but then refused to answer when asked what sort of medical problems he was afflicted with. "No, I have no medical problems," Mr. Gasparyan answered and added that he never saw Suren Sirounyan during all that time he alleges he was in the vicinity of the Myasnikian Statue. Defendant Sirounyan then asked the witness if he belonged to any political party, to which Mr. Gasparyan answered in the negative. Mr. Sirounyan then stated that during his years working at the interior ministry he had seen Mr. Gasparyan carrying a Republican Party membership card. Mr. Gasparyan's claim that he personally saw Levon Ter-Petrosyan at the Myasnikian Statue elicited rounds of laughter and cat-calls from spectators in the packed courtroom. Since the other scheduled witnesses failed to show up, the trial was recessed until April 17.
