"March 1st Seven" Defense Lawyers Walk Out

After the three hour recess, defense attorney Hovik Arsenyan failed to show up in court and the judge sanctioned him for disrespecting the court and petitioned the Council of Advocates to take the attorney's conduct under review. The defense lawyers at the "March 1st Seven" trial walked out of the courtroom to protest the judges decision to go ahead with the trial even though the defendents had been barred by Judge Martirosyan for "improper conduct" and one of the seven's lawyers was absent from the court room. The defense team objected to this decision, arguing that the attorney-client contract had been revoked and that the judge had no basis on which to deny Sasoun Mikayelyan the right to dismiss his defense lawyer Hovik Arsenyan, who, they pointed out wasn't a court appointed public defender but was contractually hired. The defense lawyers expressed their frustration with the court for scheduling sessions every day which doesn't allow them to meet and consut with their clients. They introduced a statement to the court detailing what they believe to be infringements made by the judge and pointing out the arbitrary nature of many of his decisions.
