“March 1st Seven” Trial Postponed Once Again

10_03-datThe trial of the "March 1st Seven" was to have continued today at the Kentron and Nork-Marash Court of First Instance solely in the presence of one of the defendants, Grigor Voskerchyan. The others had been barred from the court room yesterday by Judge Mnatsakan Martiroysan from disorderly and disruptive behavior. Due to a prior trial commitment in Akhaltskha, Stepan Voskanyan, Grigor Voskerchyan's defense attorney, didn’t show up in court today. Voskerchyan argued that the trial shouldn't continue in the absence of his counsel and stated that his attorney had warned the court in writing about his previously appointed court cases and the fact that he wouldn't be in Armenia from March 11-13. Stepan Voskanyan had requested a postponement of the trial but Judge Martirosyan explained that the attorney hadn't petitioned the court regarding his absence before this motion and thus no permission to be absent from the court had been granted. Hovik Arsenyan argued that prior to the conclusion of yesterday's trial session the defense had petitioned the court to take into account the prior commitments of the lawyers in order to avoid future schedule conflicts. Mr. Arsenyan stated, "The court directly ridiculed and neglected what the lawyer had stated." Judge Martirosyan declared that without the court's permission the attorney didn't have the right to be absent from the trial nor to decide on his own which case was more important, that in a neighboring republic or the one underway here. Judge Martirosyan postponed the trial till tomorrow at 12:00 pm in order for Grigor Voskerchyan to ensure the return of his attorney or to make arrangements for other counsel.
