Sarineh from Artsakh: Handmade Bags as Therapy

By Susanna Khachatryan, Hayk Makiyan (Hetq Media Factory)

Sarineh Hayriyan, from Artsakh, isn’t a quitter.

Despite losing hearth and home in Artsakh because of the recent war, Hayriyan isn’t one to sit back and wallow amid tragedy.

She keeps busy by making cloth bags, in various sizes, adorned with sayings in the Artsakh Armenian dialect and with Artsakh-inspired illustrations.

Hayriyan says her bags are an alternative to plastic bags and are a practical and fun way to “market” Artsakh language and culture.

One of her bags reads “titev tar”, which means “it’s OK/relax” in the Artsakh dialect.

Her handmade items can be found HERE.
