Court Extends Pre-Trial Detention for Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan

YEREVAN — Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Court has extended the detention of Armenia’s second president, Robert Kocharyan, by two months. The decision was issued by Judge Sargis Dadoyan in Kocharyan’s absence, following his hospitalization due to deteriorating health.

Kocharyan and nine other high-profile individuals—including his son Sedrak, former Defense Minister Serzh Sargsyan, former Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan, and former Yerevan Mayor Gagik Beglaryan—became the subjects of a sweeping criminal investigation in August 2026.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, Kocharyan faces three counts of abuse of official authority, two counts of large-scale bribery, and four counts of large-scale money laundering.

The state alleges that during his presidency, Kocharyan used his position to bypass competitive bidding and transfer valuable state properties to himself, his family, and associates at prices significantly below market value.

The targeted assets include a section of Yerevan's Cascade complex, the Kaputak Sevan resort, a 30 percent stake in Toyota Yerevan, and 56 real estate units valued at over AMD 2.6 billion built on the site of the demolished Officers' House historical monument.
