Azerbaijani Serviceman Detained After Shooting Armenian Civilian in Syunik Province
YEREVAN — An Azerbaijani soldier has been detained by Armenian authorities after allegedly crossing the border and shooting a civilian in the leg, Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS) reported on Thursday.
The incident began on September 29, when Azerbaijan’s State Security Service notified Armenian counterparts that a serviceman had abandoned his post under unknown circumstances, suggesting he may have crossed into Armenian territory. Both nations subsequently launched search operations to locate the missing soldier.
On October 1, at approximately 2:15 p.m., emergency services received reports that an Armenian citizen had suffered a gunshot wound to the leg in the village of Shaki, located in the southern Syunik Province. Police units dispatched to the scene identified the assailant as the missing Azerbaijani serviceman, who was immediately taken into custody.
Armenian officials have shared the details of the incident with the Azerbaijani side, and Armenia's Investigative Committee has officially launched criminal proceedings.
