Pashinyan to Moscow for Nuclear Power Forum

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan left for Russia today to attend the World Atomic Week forum in Moscow.

The international forum, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry, is billed as the largest event focusing on the nuclear power and related industries.

TASS reports that 20,000 representatives from more than one-hundred countries, including ministers, business leaders, scientists, leading media representatives and senior officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the World Nuclear Association (WNA), and the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), are expected to attend.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will address the event hosted by Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom.

Newsweek reports that Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) arrived in Moscow earlier this week and plans to sign a deal for Russia to construct new nuclear power stations in Iran.

In 2023, Armenia agreed to pay US$65 million to Rusatom Service, a subsidiary of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, to extend the life of the Metzamor nuclear power plant’s second unit until 2036.

The Armenian government intends to build a new nuclear power plant or a new block on the site of the existing plant. The United States and Russia are maneuvering for the contract to build the new plant.
