Thousands Rally in Yerevan to Mark Artsakh Independence Declaration Anniversary

Thousands rallied in Yerevan’s Liberty Square today to mark the 34th anniversary of the declaration of Artsakh’s independence.

Speakers at the ARF organized event called for the right of displaced Artsakh Armenians to return to their native country.

Many in the crowd, that included displaced Artsakh Armenians, displayed photos of Armenians and former Artsakh officials now held captive in Baku.

On September 2, 1991, lawmakers from the Nagorno Karabagh Regional Council and the Shahumian Regional Council convened a meeting and declared the Nagorno-Karabagh Republic with its border encompassing those of the Nagorno Karabagh Autonomous Region, as Artsakh was known in the Soviet Union, and the Shahumian Region.
