Armenian Security Chief, Iranian President Discuss August 8 Peace Agreements

Armenian Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met in Tehran today and discussed the peace agreements signed by Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington D.C. earlier this month.

The two officials, according to Grigoryan’s office, emphasized that their countries are determined to develop an ongoing dialogue aimed at establishing a strategic partnership

Pezeshkian noted that recent high-level contacts between Armenia and Iran and his official visit to Armenia two weeks ago have contributed to effectively addressing Iran’s concerns regarding those agreements and their potential impact on the region.

The Iranian president has expressed concerns over a U.S.-brokered peace agreement signed by Armenian and Azerbaijan in Washington on August 8, under which a transport route linking Azerbaijan to its landlocked exclave Nakhichevan is to be established.

Armenia granted the U.S. exclusive rights to develop the route (aka Trump Route) in its southern Syunik Province that borders Iran.

Grigoryan also met with Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and the two discussed regional developments and economic cooperation.

Larijani welcomed the August 8 agreements aimed at establishing peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, emphasizing the importance of ensuring stability and security in the South Caucasus.
