Protesters Dissatisfied with Yerevan Genocide Memorial Renovations
A large group of people gathered on the grounds of Yerevan’s Tzitzernakaberd Genocide Memorial Complex to express their dissatisfaction with the quality of ongoing renovation work on the memorial dedicated to the victims of the 1915 Armenian Genocide.
Former director of the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute Hayk Demoyan describes the work as destruction, not renovation, and expresses concern from the moral point of view that the work was entrusted to non-Armenian workers who cannot fully understand the value of the building.
He believes there was no need to demolish or remove the tiles on the outer walls, and that only cosmetic work inside the complex was needed.
This is why, Demoyan says, the project budget of AMD 800 million (US$2.1m) is inflated.
He points out that the work is being conducted by the same company that refurbished Yerevan’s Pak Shuga (Enclosed Market) underpass and the Nor Hatchn Bridge, both that needed to be renovated again.
