Iran's President In Armenia for Cooperation and "Trump Route" Talks
Armenian Deputy PM Mher Grigoryan today welcomed Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who arrived in Armenia on a two-day official visit, at Yerevan’s Zvartnots International Airport.
Iran’s Press TV reports that Pezeshkian is scheduled to hold talks with the country’s prime minister and president and sign documents for bilateral cooperation. He will also meet with Iranian expats and attend a meeting with economic players.
Prior to his departure, Pezeshkian, according to Press TV, expressed Iran’s concern about the presence of American firms in the region, saying, “Past experience showed that some of these companies have carried out unexpected and undesirable actions under the guise of commercial activities.”
He’s referring to a Pezeshkian to a US-brokered peace agreement signed by Armenian and Azerbaijan in Washington on August 8, under which a transport route linking Azerbaijan to its landlocked exclave Nakhchivan is to be established.
Armenia granted the U.S. exclusive rights to develop the route (aka Trump Route) in its southern Syunik Province that borders Iran.
The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) quotes Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghci as saying Pezeshkian’s trip will focus on ensuring no alteration to the geopolitical map of the South Caucasus, stressing that Tehran remains firmly opposed to any border changes or foreign military presence in that region.
