Pashinyan, Iranian President Discuss August 8 "Peace Deal"
Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan, in a telephone conversation today with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, argued that the “peace deal” signed on August 8 in Washington D.C. will open a host of development opportunities in the South Caucasus and the wider region.
Pashinyan, according to an Armenian government press release, told Pezeshkian that the unblocking of transportation links in the region will be based on the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, and jurisdiction of the countries and based on reciprocity.
Pashinyan thanked Pezeshkian for his objective assessments of the Washington agreements and emphasized the importance of the Pezeshkian’s upcoming visit to Armenia.
Earlier, Pezeshkian told reporters that Iran’s concerns over the opening of the so-called “Trump Route” envisaged to connect Azerbaijan with Nakhichevan, have been taken into account.
When asked if he had any concerns about a U.S. presence on the Iranian border, Pezeshkian replied: “That is one of the issues. But the issues of territorial integrity, as well as the fact that our path to Europe or the north is not closed, have been considered. The only concern is that this road will be built by American and Armenian companies.”
