Moscow Raises Concerns Over Armenia's Push for EU Membership
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk today said that Moscow is concerned about the reduction of trade with Armenia and is discussing with Yerevan what needs to be done to normalize the situation.
Overchuk was referring to today’s meeting between Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan and his Russian counterpart, Mikhail Mishustin, that took place on the sidelines of an international environmental conference in the Russian Republic of Altai.
“This is not about Pashinyan’s unwavering desire to join the EU. We are, of course, discussing issues of cooperation within the EAEU. And from this perspective, we pay attention to what decisions Armenia makes in the regulatory and legal sphere. There are some government acts that raise questions for us,” Overchuk said.
The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is an economic union of post-Soviet states in Eurasia, established in 2015.
Overchuk told reporters that Pashinyan and Mishustin also discussed Russian investments in Armenia and the current situation in the South Caucasus.
“In general, Armenia, and this was also discussed today, is willing to continue working in the Eurasian Economic Union," Overchuk said.
