
Thirteen Parties, One Alliance to Compete in Yerevan Municipal Council Election
Thirteen political parties and one political bloc have registered for next month’s election to form the new Yerevan Council of Elders (municipal council).
The last election for the 65-member legislative body was held in September 2018, following the so-called “velvet revolution”.
The council has a five-year term. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s My Step (Im Kayl) alliance dominates the current council with fifty-seven members. The Prosperous Armenia faction has five members of the council and the Luys (Bright) alliance has three members.
The person who heads the electoral list of the winning political force is considered mayor-elect and serves for four years.
The parties on the September 17 ballot: European Party of Armenia (Hayastani Yevropakan Kusaktstyun), Democratic Unity (Zhoghovrdavarakan Hamakhmboum), Civil Contract (Kaghakatsiakan Paymanagir), For Social Justice (Hanoun Sotsialakan Artarutyun), Strength of the Homeland (Uzhuh Hayrenyats), Public Voice (Hanrayin Dzayn), National Progress (Azgayin Aradjuntats), Victory (Haghtanak), Living Country (Aprelou Yerkir), Republic Party (Hanrapetutyun), United Armenia (Miatsyal Hayastan), Enlightened Armenia (Lousavor Hayastan), Just Armenia (Artar Hayastan).
The one bloc is Mother Armenia (Mayr Hayastan, an alliance of the Yerkir Tsirani and Intellectual Armenia parties.
Yerevan’s last mayor, Hrachya Sargsyan, stepped down on March 17, 2023 after fifteen months in office.
