Armenian Security Chief Warns of New Azerbaijani Aggression
Armenian Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan today, in Moscow, addressed the tenth meeting of the Secretaries of the Security Councils of the CIS member states and said that the risk of new Azerbaijani aggression against Armenia remains high.
Grigoryan, according to his office, described the September 13 Azerbaijani attacks against Armenia as a “large-scale invasion of sovereign Armenian territory and not a mere border clash”.
“I would like to specifically mention that it was not a border incident or a border clash, as some forces tried to portray it, but a large-scale invasion of the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia using heavy artillery, rocket launchers and combat drones. The armed forces of Azerbaijan shelled 36 settlements and communities deep in the sovereign territory of Armenia, including the cities of Goris, Jermuk, Vardenis, Kapan,” is quoted as saying.
Grigoryan stressed that Azerbaijan targeted Armenian civilians and vital civil infrastructure and that Azerbaijani armed forces continue to illegally control tens of square kilometers of Armenian land.
Grigoryan spoke about the process to delineate the Armenia-Azerbaijan border and that an agreement was reached in Prague, on October 6, according to which the former administrative borders of the Soviet republics have become state borders between already independent countries, including Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“Recognition of this fact is extremely important for ensuring stability and security not only on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, but also throughout the CIS,” Grigoryan said.
He said that Baku is not interested in resolving the issue of unblocking transportation links in the region and persists in demanding a “corridor” through Armenia.
