Ter-Petrosyan Says All Armenian Parties Except ANC Squandered Karabakh Settlement Opportunities
Former Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan, in an article in ilur.am today, said that all parties in Armenia, except his Armenian National Movement (ANC), squandered numerous favorable opportunities to resolve the Karabakh conflict.
Ter-Petrosyan said those accusing Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan for the inglorious defeat in last year’s Artsakh war are shifting their portion of the blame on others.
Ter-Petrosyan said the policy of “maintaining the status-quo and refusing to compromise” became the policy of successive governments, leading to the catastrophe Armenia faces today.
The article reads, in part:
The so-called elite of the nation, that is the overwhelming majority of the intelligentsia, political scientists, analysts, journalists, academics, university professors, the leaders of almost all national structures of the Diaspora, have their share of responsibility.
In a word, all the forces that made Armenian claims and “not one inch of land” the national religion of the Armenians, moreover, as inexplicable as the Bible. Figuratively speaking, all the forces I listed, with the final role of Nikol Pashinyan, brilliantly fulfilled Vazgen Sargsyan's two "commandments".
- "The land conquered by blood is not handed over on paper" - that is, they are handed over with more blood, which: happened.
- "We will compromise when we are forced" - and a forced solution is nothing but a capitulation, which also became a reality.
To be fair, I consider it my duty to mention that, to his credit, Vazgen, belatedly, felt his mistake and tried to correct it through an alliance with Karen Demirchyan. I believe that this bloc, with its reassessment of Vazgen Sargsyan's mistake, combined with the wisdom of Karen Demirchyan, could have returned the Karabakh settlement process to a realistic level. However, the October 27 atrocity put an end to this encouraging development.
(Here, Ter-Petrosyan refers to the October 27, 1999 attack on the Armenian parliament during which PM Vazgen Sargsyan and Parliament Speaker Karen Demirchyan were killed by gunmen.)
